Originally opened in 2006, the Milpillas Mine had a projected lifespan of 11 years. By 2011, most of the ore bodies had been mined out, and holding companies indicated that unless others were found, production would cease. In 2015, new ore bodies were found at a lateral depth equivalent to those previously worked, extending mine life expectancy to 2027. Specimen harvest is actively discouraged by mine operations.
This specimen features a rich velvet-like plate of malachite pseudomorphing azurite.
