Hemimorphite - Elkhorn Mine, Elkhorn Mining District, Jefferson County, Montana, USA
Northwest of the town of Boulder lies the ghost town of Elkhorn. The Elkhorn Mine was one of the richest silver producers in the northwest part of the USA, producing 6.5 million ounces prior to 1900. By 1912, continuous operations had halted. Several attempts at reopening of production failed due to profitability.
This specimen is a small vug of divergent hemimorphite blades on a "dry bone ore" matrix with a druze of smithsonite. Collected by Chris Tucker, this represents an uncommon find for Montana in generality.
