Initially discovered in 1886 by local gold prospectors, the Little Gem Mine became Montana's longest standing amethyst locality. Producing world class scepters and jacare (Portuguese word for alligator skin) formations, the mine is a pegmatite body hosted in 76 million year old granite.

"Gatorback" is a large matrix of microcline and smoky quartz pegmatite rock coated with rich jacare growth. When lit with 254nm wavelength, hyalite opal is shown on some of the crystal faces. This specimen displays well naturally.
